More information here.  \nAbstract: Black carbon (BC) particles affect climate directly through the absorption of solar radiation and indirectly by changing cloud properties such as cloud amount and lifetime. An abundant source of BC is biomass burn (BB) events (i.e.\, wildfires)\, which concurrently release copious amounts of condensable organic vapors that form thick coatings that encapsulate the BC. The coatings increase the hydrophilicity of the otherwise hydrophobic BC particles while at the same time increase the particle size\, both of which enhance the ability of these particles to act as cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) and affect their optical properties. Due to the complex interplay between hydrophilic properties of the coating and the hydrophobic properties of the BC “core”\, along with the particle size\, better quantification of the hygroscopic properties for this important class of particle will improve our understanding and representation of the direct and indirect climatic forcing contributions by these particles. In this seminar\, I will discuss the CCN activity of pure and thickly coated BC surrogate particles determined by laboratory measurements under typical atmospheric supersaturations using levoglucosan\, a known tracer for BB\, as a proxy for fresh organic coating and oleic acid as a surrogate for aged organic coating\, as a function of coating thickness for different core (i.e.\, BC) mobility diameters. Additionally\, experimental results are used to derive the hygroscopicity parameter (κ) of the BC core and coatings. The limiting cases of fresh and aged organic coatings\, which span the range of coating ages\, are used to investigate the activation behavior of an ensemble BC particle population consisting of particles with different core diameters and different coating thicknesses and how activation\, in turn\, affects the aerosol optical properties. The findings presented provide a critical fundamental-level understanding of aerosol-cloud interactions for this important class of particles. \nLocation: ENR building\, room 223

More information here.  \nAbstract: Clay-rich soils and sediments are abundant natural materials that consist predominantly of hydrated assemblages of fine-grained aluminosilicate minerals. These materials exhibit complex mechanical properties that control a variety of important natural and engineered processes including subsurface fluid migration\, soil health (e.g.\, soil resilience to erosion and drought)\, geophysical hazards (subsidence\, landslides\, fault slip) as well as opportunities in additive manufacturing using Earth materials. The mechanics of clay-rich media include complex rheological properties\, a strong cohesive character\, and a tendency to swell or shrink significantly with changes in salinity or humidity. We present efforts to gain insight into the complex mechanics of clay-rich media using all-atom and coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations. I am passionate about the aquatic environment and in particular\, about the use of otoliths (fish ear stones) and the information that can be gleaned from such tiny structures\, such as the age\, annual growth rates\, migration and environmental factors. I have also been involved in other aspects of marine and freshwater ecology such as coral reef monitoring\, seagrass surveys\, turtle research\, in-situ coral experiments and biofouling surveys. SUMMARY:The Magic of Pressure Cooking: Hydrothermal Systems for Waste Valorization
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: More than 100 million metric tonnes of wet organic wastes are produced each year in the US\, representing a very real challenge for waste management due to their high production rate and the inefficiency of conventional management methods. At the same time\, these waste streams represent untapped resources that can be repurposed into valuable products. Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is an emerging technology that leverages the unique properties of water at elevated temperature and pressure (e.g.\, increase in ionic product and organic solubility) to convert heterogeneous organic materials into an oil-phase biocrude\, an aqueous phase\, hydrochar\, and gas products. Through various upgrading technologies\, these intermediates can then be further turned into biofuels and fuel additives\, platform chemicals\, construction materials\, and fertilizer products. This talk will provide an overview of the principles and applications of hydrothermal waste valorization systems\, while discussing the sustainability and future research needs of these systems in comparison with existing waste management strategies.

As I’ve been writing up a final report for an NSF Sustainable Regional System planning grant and facing the implementation proposal\, we’ll discuss the cultural challenges of developing such relationships against the imperative of working across silos of specialization and fragmentation. \nI’ll briefly describe the beginning of two sets of such relationships\, well three really: working with Elders of the Munsee Lunaape communities\, working with faculty at SEBS\, and the most gnarly – explaining this to administrators. \nMore of our time will focus on the most difficult challenge of bridging “science” and the historical and translational chasm between what are referenced as Local Indigenous Knowledge (ILK) and Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) in our region\, now regularly cited by the IPCC as key to the enormous changes we now face. \nHow can all this be grounded in ongoing applied research and relationship building? \nHow can this also be understood as what the NSF has framed as “convergence research”? \nMore information here.

SUMMARY:Applications of Machine Learning for Climate Change and Variability
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Zachary Labe\, Princeton University and NOAA/GFDL  \nAbstract: The popularity of machine learning methods\, such as neural networks\, continues to rapidly grow. The interest in these tools also coincides with a growing influx of big data\, high performance computing capabilities\, and the need for greater efficiency in solving a range of tasks. However\, there is also some hesitancy for considering the use of machine learning algorithms due to concerns about their reliability\, reproducibility\, and interpretability. In this seminar\, I will show examples of how relatively simple classification problems can be combined with explainable artificial intelligence to improve our understanding of climate prediction and projection. Overall\, we find that explainable neural networks are highly skillful in identifying patterns of forced signals within climate model large ensembles and observations. This is especially useful for disentangling regional responses to anthropogenic climate change versus natural variability\, such as in detection and attribution applications. This same explainability framework can be easily adapted for a wide variety of problems in the environmental sciences.  \nMore information here.
