SUMMARY:CANCELLED Our Fragile Moment: How Lessons from Earth's Past Can Help Us Survive the Climate Crisis

Mann\, University of Pennsylvania  \nAbstract: For the vast majority of its 4.54 billion years\, Earth has proven it can manage just fine without human beings. Then came the first proto-humans\, who emerged just a little more than 2 million years ago—a fleeting moment in geological time. What is it that made this benevolent moment of ours possible? Ironically\, it’s the very same thing that now threatens us—climate change. The drying of the tropics during the Pleistocene period created a niche for early hominids\, who could hunt prey as forests gave way to savannahs in the African tropics. The sudden cooling episode known as the “Younger Dryas” 13\,000 years ago\, which occurred just as Earth was thawing out of the last Ice Age\, spurred the development of agriculture in the fertile crescent. The “Little Ice Age” cooling of the 16th-19th centuries led to famines and pestilence for much of Europe\, yet it was a boon for the Dutch\, who were able to take advantage of stronger winds to shorten their ocean voyages. The conditions that allowed humans to live on this earth are fragile\, incredibly so. Climate variability has at times created new niches that humans or their ancestors could potentially exploit\, and challenges that at times have spurred innovation. But there’s a relatively narrow envelope of climate variability within which human civilization remains viable. And our survival depends on conditions remaining within that range. In this talk\, I will arm readers with the knowledge necessary to appreciate the gravity of the unfolding climate crisis\, while emboldening them—and others—to act before it truly does become too late. \nMore information here.

SUMMARY:Exceptional Stratospheric Contribution to Human Fingerprints  on Atmospheric Temperature
DESCRIPTION:Benjamin Santer will give a technical talk titled “Exceptional Stratospheric Contribution to Human Fingerprints on Atmospheric Temperature”. The talk is hybrid and will take place on Nov. 12\, 2024\, at 3:30 PM in the Alampi Room\, Marine and Coastal Sciences Building and Webinar through Zoom\, with this registration link. This event is co-sponsored by RCEI and Rutgers Graduate Program in Atmosperic Sciences. Below is Dr. Santer’s description for the talk: \nIn 1967\, Suki Manabe and Richard Wetherald used a simple climate model to predict that human-caused increases in atmospheric CO2 should warm Earth’s troposphere and cool the stratosphere. This important signature of anthropogenic climate change was subsequently documented in weather balloon and satellite temperature measurements extending from near-surface to the lower stratosphere. Stratospheric cooling has also been confirmed in the mid- to upper stratosphere\, a layer extending from roughly 25 to 50 km above Earth’s surface (S25-50). Until recently\, however\, S25-50 temperatures had not been used in pattern-based attribution studies of anthropogenic climate change. \nMy talk describes the first such “fingerprint” study\, with satellite-derived patterns of temperature change extending from the lower troposphere to the upper stratosphere. Including S25-50 information increases signal-to-noise ratios by a factor of five\, markedly enhancing fingerprint detectability. Key features of this global-scale human fingerprint include stratospheric cooling and tropospheric warming at all latitudes\, with stratospheric cooling amplifying with height. In contrast\, the dominant modes of internal variability in S25-50 have smaller-scale temperature changes and lack uniform sign. These pronounced spatial differences between the S25-50 signal and noise patterns are accompanied by large cooling of the S25-50 layer (1-2°C over 1986 to 2022) and low S25-50 noise levels. Our results explain why extending “vertical fingerprinting” to the mid- to upper stratosphere yields incontrovertible evidence of human effects on the thermal structure of Earth’s atmosphere. \nThe end of my talk will consider a simple thought experiment: If satellite temperature data had existed in 1860\, when could a human fingerprint on atmospheric temperature have been first detected? I will address this question with output from CMIP6 simulations of historical climate change.

SUMMARY:Using an Integrated Human-Earth System Model to Explore the Multisectoral Impacts of Global Change
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Neal Graham\, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.  \nAbstract: Scientists leverage Global Circulation Models (GCMs) and Earth System Models (ESMs) to study how atmospheric and oceanic changes may evolve in time due to our complex and changing climate. For example\, these models allow us to understand how precipitation and temperature may change in a world with radiative forcing of 2.6 W/m2 at the end of the century However\, what these models often miss are the influences brought upon by humans\, and the feedbacks brought upon by decision-making which alter the supply and demand of energy\, water\, and land around the world. During this talk\, I will discuss the Global Change Analysis Model (GCAM)\, the types of research questions that we seek to answer using GCAM\, and how this work leads to tangible changes around the world. Additionally\, I will discuss how the complexities of global and regional energy-water-land nexus plays a role in how we think about water supply and demand in the future. SUMMARY:Permutable Stratosphere: Overflights and a Geopoetics of Transpacific Top Secrecy (1958-2024)
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Jerry Zee\, Princeton University. \nAbstract: This talk explores how the stratosphere has taken shape as a front in the shifting geopolitics of China\, Taiwan\, and the United States. Thinking oceanic relation from the high atmosphere\, we trace a history of spyplanes\, balloons\, cover stories\, and clouds to investigate how the gray zones between meteorological research and reconnaissance spycraft continuously throw the sky into permutations of the geopolitical and the geophysical. From early US overflights over the Taiwan Straits and secret missions over mainland China in the Cold War\, and the various ways that Sino-Taiwanese-American relations have coalesced around balloons that alternately appear to collect weather and intelligence data\, we ask how top secrecy in the sky takes form through subtle and increasingly incredible performances of state public-ness.Assistant Professor Jerry Zee is jointly appointed in the Department Anthropology and the High Meadows Environmental Institute. Zee is a sociocultural anthropologist whose research explores geophysical and environmental emergence as sites of political experiment. His work is situated at the intersections of feminist science and technology studies\, environmental humanities\, and experimental ethnography. He considers the rise of China as a matter of geophysical and geopolitical entanglement\, moving across weather systems that connect inland land degradation\, major dust storm formation\, and the eventual scattering of Chinese land as meteorological fallout across the Northern Hemisphere. He comes to Princeton after having served as assistant professor in Anthropology and Critical Race and Ethnic Studies at UC Santa Cruz and a Wenner-Gren Foundation Hunt Fellow. He completed his PhD at UC Berkeley’s Anthropology Department and was Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Fellow at UC Davis in Anthropology and the Program in Science and Technology Studies. \nMore information here.

SUMMARY:The Map in the Machine: Charting the Spatial Architecture of Digital Capitalism
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Luis Felipe Alvarez León\, Dartmouth University \nAbstract: Digital technologies have changed how we shop\, work\, play\, and communicate\, reshaping our societies and economies. To understand digital capitalism\, we need to grasp how advances in geospatial technologies underpin the construction\, operation\, and refinement of markets for digital goods and services. In this talk\, based on his recent book\, The Map in the Machine\, Luis F. Alvarez León examines these advances\, from MapQuest and Google Maps to the rise of IP geolocation\, ridesharing\, and a new Earth Observation satellite ecosystem. He develops a geographical theory of digital capitalism centered on the processes of location\, valuation\, and marketization to provide a new vantage point from which to better understand\, and intervene in\, the dominant techno-economic paradigm of our time. By centering the spatiality of digital capitalism\, Alvarez León shows how this system is the product not of seemingly intangible information clouds but rather of a vast array of technologies\, practices\, and infrastructures deeply rooted in place\, mediated by geography\, and open to contestation and change. \nMore information here.

SUMMARY:Enhancing Wind-Farm Performance Via Unsteady Fluid Mechanics
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Nathaniel Wei\, University of Pennsylvania  \nAbstract: Modern wind turbines\, like aircraft and other aerodynamic structures\, are typically designed with the assumption that the flows they encounter will be uniform and steady. However\, atmospheric flows are highly unsteady\, and systems operating within them must contend with gust disturbances that can lead to performance losses and structural damage. In this talk\, we describe experimental and analytical efforts to account for and even leverage these unsteady flow phenomena to enhance the power generation of wind turbines and wind farms. We focus on periodic oscillations in the inflow velocity and turbine thrust\, problems that are particularly relevant for traditional ground-fixed turbines in axial gusts and floating offshore turbines undergoing rocking motions in the streamwise direction. Wind-tunnel experiments with a periodically surging wind turbine show that power-production gains above 6% over the stationary case may be realized in practice. Further experiments in an optical towing tank demonstrate that the same unsteady flow conditions can decrease the downstream extent of the wake by over 40%\, thereby increasing the power available for downstream turbines in an array. Physics-based models of the power generation and wake dynamics help clarify the mechanisms responsible for these behaviors. Finally\, these mechanisms are explored at utility-scale Reynolds numbers through experiments with a turbine undergoing periodic rotation-rate oscillations in a pressurized-air wind tunnel. Our investigations provide theoretical and experimental foundations for the design of next-generation wind-energy systems that make use of naturally occurring unsteady flows for enhanced performance and reliability. \nMore information here.
