SUMMARY:Chronic Disease in the Context of the Environmental Exposome
DESCRIPTION:Event Format: In-person \nAbstract: Cancer and cardiovascular disease are influenced by the spatial context in which people live. Environmental and neighborhood socioeconomic exposures are etiologically relevant for many chronic diseases via multiple mechanistic pathways. In this talk\, Charlie will discuss her work on environmental exposure assessment for epidemiology\, including the use of Earth Observation technologies. Additionally\, she’ll discuss her recent work with Dr. Hari Iyer (Assistant Professor at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey) to model hypothetical environmental interventions to reduce cancer outcome disparities. SUMMARY:Combined Land Use of Solar Energy and Agriculture (Agrivoltaics) for Socioeconomic and Environmental Co-Benefits
DESCRIPTION:Event Format: Hybrid \nAbstract: Co-locating solar photovoltaics with vegetation (Agrivoltaics) could provide a sustainable solution to meeting growing food and energy demands. We studied the co-location of solar energy with crops/biofuels\, grazing and/or pollinator-friendly native plants at multiple sites around the world\, and explored the environmental and socio-economic co-benefits. The compounding effect of photovoltaic arrays and vegetation may homogenize soil moisture distribution and provide greater soil temperature buffer against extreme temperatures. Agrivoltaics on agricultural areas with carbon debt can be an effective climate mitigation strategy along with revitalizing agricultural soils\, generating income streams from fallow land\, and providing pollinator habitats. However\, the benefits of vegetation cooling effects on electricity generation are rather site-specific and depend on the background climate and soil properties. Overall\, our findings provide foundational data for site preservation along with targeting site-specific co-benefits\, and for developing climate resilient and resource conserving agrivoltaic systems. \nSponsored by Rutgers Department of Environmental Sciences . The virtual meeting can be found here. \nAbstract: Past warm periods serve as testing grounds to explore how major ice sheets respond to warming. In my work I work on reconstructing sea level during past warm periods including the Last interglacial (~125 ka)\, the mid-Pliocene warm period (~3 Ma)\, and the early Pliocene (~5 Ma) when temperatures were warmer than today (0.5-1.5 ºC\, 2-3 ºC\, ~4ºC relative to pre-industrial\, respectively). In this talk I will first focus on a Last Interglacial sea level record from the Bahamas. I will show the stratigraphic evidence including new U-Th coral ages and describe how we can leverage the spatial extent of the data to constrain the contribution of glacial isostatic adjustment to past sea level. I will further present ongoing research that integrates this finding with observations from sites around the globe to fingerprint the melt history of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets during the last interglacial. Lastly\, I will highlight a few studies that constrain sea level during earlier warm periods and stress the importance of understanding mantle convection for these reconstructions. I will end by showing that the results from all time periods combined may paint a coherent picture of ice sheet sensitivity and explore what this means for ice sheet processes and future sea level rise. \nLocation: Online or in person in Wright Auditorium on Busch Campus
