SUMMARY:Understanding Weather Hazards Impacting the Eastern US through Analysis of Cyclone Tracks\, With a Focus on Storm Surge
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, November 3\, 2023. 2:30 PM. Understanding Weather Hazards Impacting the Eastern US through Analysis of Cyclone Tracks\, With a Focus on Storm Surge. James Booth\, City University of New York. Sponsored by Rutgers Department of Environmental Sciences. More information here.  \nAbstract: This talk will focus on hazards generated by hurricanes and extratropical cyclones along the US east coast. Overall\, the talk will cover the climatological statistics of the hazards and characteristics of the storms that cause the hazards. Specifically\, I will report on our analysis of historical storm surge observations\, comparing the behavior of hurricanes and extratropical cyclones that generated extreme surge events. I will go into detail on probabilities of storm surge generated by hurricanes\, and the skill\, or lack thereof\, in statistically modeling surge amplitude based on properties of the hurricanes that caused them. Then I will discuss long-duration storm surge events for the NYC region and the synoptic-scale atmospheric features that cause them. I will briefly discuss precipitation and high wind events for the northeast US – again focusing on the storms that generate the events. All of the statistical results utilize a cyclone track analysis approach to determine links between synoptic-scale organization of the storm and the traits of the hazards they produce. The results are then explained based on physical processes. Ultimately\, the work presented advances our understanding of hazards and is useful for hazard management offices and National Weather Service offices. After focusing on storms associated with specific hazards\, I will discuss a separate analysis on temporal clustering of cyclones. In this case\, the results explain the behavior of the cyclones involved in clustering events\, rather than hazards. \nLocation: Rutgers ENR building\, room 223

SUMMARY:Air Pollution Links to the Sources and Sinks of Greenhouse Gases in New York City
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, November 10\, 2023. 2:30 PM. Air Pollution Links to the Sources and Sinks of Greenhouse Gases in New York City. Roisin Commane\, Columbia University. Sponsored by Rutgers Department of Environmental Sciences. More information here. \nAbstract: Many city governments in the US have committed to reducing their emissions of GHGs based on inventories calculated for the city. However\, few cities measure their carbon emissions to know if the enacted policies are having the desired effect. The New York Metro Area (pop. 20M) is the most populous urban area in the United States (US) and the largest urban source of CO2 in the US. The region also has some of the worst summertime air quality (NOx and ozone exceedances) outside of California\, much of which is transported downwind to Connecticut. We have observed concentrations of methane\, ethane\, CO\, CO2 and N2O over long periods at an observatory in Manhattan (starting in 2019) and at the Rutgers air quality site in New Brunswick since January 2023. We combine atmospheric transport models with our observations to evaluate various trace gas inventories for the city (for methane\, CO and CO2). To interpret the CO2 observations\, we built a model for biogenic CO2 photosynthesis and respiration for NYC that includes street and park trees and urban lawns and found that the large amounts of vegetation in the city absorbs much of the daytime CO2 emitted from traffic across the city. We also identified surprising N2O emissions from specific waste water treatment plants in the city. Our observations of many trace gases have allowed us to study the source characteristics of methane and understand the impact of co-emitted species on urban atmospheric chemistry. \nLocation: Webinar

SUMMARY:St. Augustine: History and Resiliency of a First Coast City
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, November 29\, 2023. 4:00 PM. St. Augustine: History and Resiliency of a First Coast City. Isabella Guttuso\, University of Florida. Sponsored by Rutgers Department of Landscape Architecture. More information here.  \nAbstract: Coastal cities historically built in floodplains have adapted through time to the challenges that arise from settling in a landscape shaped by water. Climate change has exacerbated the natural events that these communities face. St. Augustine\, the oldest continuously occupied settlement of European and African-American origin in the United States\, is grappling with vulnerability posed by floods and aging infrastructure. This presentation summarizes the history of St. Augustine through the current day and highlights the ways flooding is projected to impact the region. It will also touch on the projects being implemented by the city\, University of Florida and other entities with the intent of creating a network of resilient infrastructure that will ensure America’s “oldest” city carries on its rich cultural and historic legacy. \nLocation: IFNH 101\, 61 Dudley Rd\, New Brunswick\, NJ 08901
