SUMMARY:Biodiversity\, Ecosystem Services\, and the Conservation of Wild Bees
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Rachael Winfree\, Rutgers University.  \nAbstract: Human well-being relies on ecosystem services\, yet ecology lacks a clear understanding of how biodiversity affects ecosystem services in the real world — that is\, in naturally assembled communities studied at large spatial scales. In the first part of this talk I will share my lab’s work on this topic\, for which we use native bee pollinators\, and the pollination services they provide to crops and wild plants\, as a study system. The second part of my talk will discuss the translational side of my research program\, in which we study the habitat needs and conservation status of wild bee species\, and work with government agencies and conservation organizations to conserve and restore pollinators. \nMore information here.

SUMMARY:Resistant Ecologies in a Landscape of War: Lessons from South Lebanon
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Munira Khayyat\, New York University.  \nAbstract: What worlds take root in war? This talk takes us to the southern border of Lebanon where resistant ecologies thrive amid perennial gusts of war. In frontline villages\, armed invasions\, indiscriminate bombings\, and scattered landmines have become the conditions within which everyday life is waged. Here\, multi-species partnerships such as tobacco-farming and goat-herding carry life through seasons of destruction. Neither green-tinged utopia nor total devastation\, these survival collectives make life possible within an insistently deadly region. Sourcing an anthropology of war from where it is lived decolonizes distant theories of war and brings to light creative practices forged in the midst of ongoing devastation. Like other unlivable worlds of the Anthropocene\, war is a place where life must go on.  \nMore information here.
