RCEI affiliate Charles Dismukes, Distinguished Professor, and his Rutgers colleagues Anders Laursen, Research Associate; Martha Greenblatt, Distinguished Professor; and Karin Calvinho, PhD Candidate—all from the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology—have received the 2024 Edison Patent Award from the Research & Development Council of New Jersey. This is the state’s highest recognition for inventors and innovation for their Nickel Phosphide Catalysts for Direct Electrochemical CO2 Reduction to Hydrocarbons patent in the Industrial Processes category. Professor Dismukes’ research focuses on the replacement of fossil fuels and chemicals with sustainable sources of these materials. He develops catalysts to produce multi-carbon products from CO2 using renewable electricity. These processes are carbon-negative and designed from an understanding of the chemical principles of microbial carboxylation and natural photosynthesis. His biocatalysis research seeks to improve the solar efficiency of photosynthesis for applications to agriculture and food security. The honorees will be recognized during the 45th annual Edison Patent Award Ceremony and Reception on November 21, 2024 at Bell Works in Holmdel, NJ.
