Rutgers University scientists James Simon, RCEI Affiliate and Distinguished Professor, Department of Plant Biology, and Ramu Govindasamy, professor and chair, Department of Agricultural and Food Resource Economics, and Dena Seidel, RCEI Affiliate and science communication researcher, paid a courtesy call on Governor Stevenson A. Joseph, Pohnpei State, Micronesia. The Rutgers delegation was joined on the visit by Micronesian officials Hubert Yamada, Director of Resources and Development, Mr. Mark Kostka from FSM Department of Resources and Development, and Ms. Shirley Ligohr, Overseas Development Assistance Coordinator.
The purpose of the courtesy call was to update Governor Joseph on the progress of a groundbreaking and comprehensive food security policy initiated during the previous administration. This policy is designed to be locally relevant, considering the unique conditions, culture, and traditions of Pohnpei.
Governor Joseph warmly welcomed the Rutgers delegation and expressed his appreciation for their dedication to enhancing food security in the region. He outlined his vision for addressing food security challenges through sustainable Agriculture and Aquaculture practices, emphasizing that it remains a top priority for his administration.
The visiting scientists were pleased to hear Governor Joseph’s commitment to addressing food security and appreciated his focus on leveraging agriculture and aquaculture as key solutions. They highlighted the importance of incorporating traditional farming methods into the policy framework, emphasizing sustainability and the preservation of indigenous practices.
During discussions, the Rutgers team conveyed their eagerness to continue to collaborate with the Pohnpei State Government to implement positive changes in the area of food security. Governor Joseph welcomed this collaboration, recognizing the value of combining local wisdom with scientific expertise to achieve sustainable solutions.
The courtesy call concluded on a positive note, with both parties expressing optimism about the collaborative efforts to further develop and implement the food security policy.
