Lead author of the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change’s (IPCC) 2021 assessment report, member of NASA’s Sea Level Change Team, and one of the directors at the Climate Impact Lab, RCEI affiliate Robert Kopp weighed in his thoughts on the changes the Trump administration’s science budget cuts would bring. He called it “a tragedy not just for the US but for the world that the US elected a leadership that views life and economics as zero-sum competitions for resources” and he warned of a dire future that the slowing of scientific progress could bring. The cooperative relationship between the US federal government and institutions of research had been robustly in place for a long time, and Kopp noted the blatant and illegal nature of Trump’s efforts to break that partnership. However, he still expressed faith in the United States’ continued scientific involvement, pointing to the private sector.
