Wind Energy Test (W.E.T.) Center Project
The Wind Energy Test (W.E.T.) Center Project is a signature initiative of Rutgers Climate and Energy Institute (RCEI). The effort includes two key components: (1) the preliminary design of a Net-Zero Wind Energy Test (WET) Center that could potentially be located near the Jersey Shore, and (2) development and implementation of a smaller WET Lab on the Rutgers – New Brunswick campus. The WET Center Project tackles the future of wind energy with a focus on validation of predictive models for floating offshore wind turbines, in return, addressing challenges in installation, transportation, and ultimately the cost of energy. This groundbreaking project is co-led by Dr. Onur Bilgen, an associate professor in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, and Dr. Josh Kohut, a professor in the Department of Marine and Coastal Sciences.
With an investment of $1.1 million from the Rutgers–New Brunswick Chancellor’s Office, the WET Center Project aims to position New Jersey as a global leader in the offshore wind energy sector. Collaboration among scholars from diverse disciplines will position Rutgers globally as a hub for multidisciplinary wind energy production. This collaborative approach not only supports New Jersey's vision of global leadership in offshore wind energy but also underscores Rutgers' commitment to addressing societal challenges through innovative research and education.
