“We are all experiencing sea level rise here in New Jersey and that it’s not just a scientific story, it’s a personal story,” said RCEI affiliate Lisa Auermuller, in a new article published by NBC Philadelphia. The article discusses recent changes in New Jersey’s weather patterns, with a strong focus on the heavy flash-flooding and sea level rise from multiple angles.
Throughout the state, the past summer brought along with it an unusually large number of flash flood warnings – a trend that corresponds with the drastic warming of the earth’s oceans and atmosphere, as well as a clear recession in shorelines worldwide. Even Rutgers University’s own marine field station, a research facility established to study the ocean, is facing the active and ongoing reality that it may soon be swallowed up by the subject of its own exploration.
Nevertheless, as RCEI affiliate Thomas Grothues described, even with the shore around the station coming off in chunks, scientists are determined to study there to the end and continue to monitor the effects of climate change on New Jersey.
